I went back over the footage and changed some of the frames where the animation looked odd and tried to adjust the shakiness the camera caused.

Upon reflection, I feel as though I haven't done as well in this project as I would have liked. I was unable to use Toon Boom and therefore learn a new animation program, I didn't find out how to track on After Effects until a week or two ago by which point it was too late to adjust my animation, and the amount of footage I was supposed to animate is slightly less than the 30 seconds specified in the project brief.

If I were to do this project over, I would spend more time at the beginning trying to work out these things and therefore challenge myself more. This project has built upon my flash skills and it was interesting to try and animate on top of footage but I am unhappy with the quality of the result, if we hadn't missed the first two weeks of college due to the snow I may have been able to add more in-betweens and lengthen the footage. The quality of the footage dropped after I imported it into flash as well so maybe next time I should investigate into green screen methods or try another program.

I am happy that I was able to add shading into this animation though, as there was not enough time during the last project. I also like some parts of my animation - his arm as he paints at the beginning and his angry face at the end.

Comparing this work to that in the industry, it is below the standard they would expect, although I think my idea was quite good, I just needed more time to complete it. I also need to draw upon more of the animation principles like 'squash and stretch' so that the animation flows better. I completed the animation itself over a week or so and this was highly stressful so I will need to remember and rework the method I had on my previous project which was to work on it slowly for a couple hours a day for a couple of weeks and then I will enjoy it more and get a better result.

You can watch the finished result below...

I also created a schedule using Excel for this project which can be seen below...

<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 200px; height: 52px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEio-IHgAqquhTbvS7eeEFcQVkaTFMhpviWuNFEkA21NqqeIHVb28ZmK7ruaZRkBan5PkpqCc_r4TAlqKoO1Pa8MzAoKGrJ5QV0HFLYA-RcDhjoPBjFGKP1dDgpk71ojGxg7QTb3IVOPRIw/s200/Picture+2.png" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5444906155782589266" />Michelle Vinallhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04475683890194875319noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1955629010162142273.post-43929612843367924372010-02-22T08:13:00.000-08:002010-02-22T08:42:32.053-08:00one week of progress...I have roughly finished the animation for my industry exercises project today. However, there are still a lot of things that can be improved and upon watching it through I came up with a list that will help me…

Things that need improving;
· Tried to get better quality movie, flash may be lowering the quality!
· Add sound
· First part is fine, detailed enough
· Just more detailed needed on in-betweens during walk cycles.
· Size of character changes at end, he needs to be smaller.
· More animation on parts when he is standing still – for example he could do something with his arms or scratch his face.
· Very badly animated when he falls over their feet! Redo!
· Ending is fine as well.

I also plan to show this to Steve Crocker on Wednesday’s lesson and get his feedback on parts I can improve, as well as by asking my friends. I’m not sure how much I will be able to do in the time frame left but I want to try and make it look at least a little more professional! I feel more willing to do so now that the pressure is slightly off.

Also, last week Alex Hulse, another tutor, had a glance over at my work and gave me some good suggestions to counter the problem of the ‘jumpiness’ of the camera. If I import the scene into After Effects, I can use ‘tracking’ to hold it still (even though this will crop some of the footage out and means I will need to put black bars and the top and bottom of my animation.

Unfortunately, since I have already finished my animation and tried to compensate for the camera’s ‘jumpiness’ by manually moving the character in time and rubbing out the parts of his body that I needed to, it would be needless time and effort to enforce this in the final project when I have spent so many hours on it already and I would rather use the time to improve the actual animation itself than the quality of the camera.

Here is the test we did though, to show what I’ve learned.

If you compare this to the original footage it is much smoother… The green cube should be able to show that.Michelle Vinallhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04475683890194875319noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1955629010162142273.post-91897000603046121472010-02-16T06:07:00.000-08:002010-02-16T06:53:09.291-08:00Start of Animating and FormativeHad my formative on Wednesday last week with Steve, but it seems as though everything is going alright at the moment. I think he was a bit concerned with the amount of work I've set myself and whether I can complete it in time, but I plan to work like a crazy person over this week and get my animation done!!!

Okay, so yes, I have now started animating this scene. I have run into a few bumps along the way but am progressing as well as I can.

Here are a few clips of what I have done so far...;

Just very simple animation of him painting..

And one where he walks behind Gene and Donald. The reason he moves around so much in this one is because I adjusted where he was standing to fit the camera movements of the film, unfortunately that file is too big for blogspot to support so I had to delete the film from the background.

---
::Thoughts::

We are much further into the project than I thought we were, there are roughly 2/3 weeks remaining to work on this and after consideration have decided to go back to using Flash, as I'm finding it difficult and am wasting a lot of time trying to get ToonBoom.

I also am disappointed in myself for the quality of animation so far, as I have already said, I plan to go back after it's completed and add more detail in, but if I don't do that this project will not be up to my usual standard and I feel as though I might deem it a failure...

I feel as though I haven't really achieved anything new due to time constraints, only practised getting better at flash. It's interesting timing my character with real life ones but I don't feel as though this is as big a step forwards as I wanted it to be.Michelle Vinallhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04475683890194875319noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1955629010162142273.post-73787255776888148902010-02-02T06:17:00.000-08:002010-02-16T07:07:10.291-08:00character designI'm a tiny bit behind with my schedule, but I have been toying with the character design in my head for the last week or so, constantly changing my opinion, and have decided to change him slightly so that he's not such an old man.
Now I want to animate him as a middle-aged, short, fat guy! This will be more challenging and I won't feel as bad for him getting beaten up :D

I have also found a useful walk cycle on youtube of someone with his figure which I can adapt for my animation;

Anyway, I quickly drew him onto photoshop and started playing around with the colours..

<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 200px; height: 100px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiiVdP6w6Rj6gBqssQTkGA1hDrDxaCZMizpgIgZJ5BavqsKNlg-tYCGivk3rVMF-uSjEjK5y4U44riWRUbKpbL0s8PzfA6vIgKOg3U_Xp0llIDxl6lXxhtaivkHIIbcZxnv_c660-m8gFk/s200/charriedesigns.png" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5433652382705376946" />

<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 200px; height: 162px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj2BplWEsSO81RZr_VU0flXRTTQrmcrquM8GJPlTEMIki_Ii5MLR3rfTnk3lA-KcWGKO93Vb5aMKRNu7vq43s607UhFhTFd_FVm-oN7qbddGWsVswFVRDsXBo8quyAjiF_QixIyn8bJlHQ/s200/charriedesign4.png" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5433650789847253618" /><img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 200px; height: 162px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhMWXdTZuYb7XZW84vfiLsA4V0nM2EU4V3fhAkc9ojOUV4sCpqvr0Gsx_9UbaoWYJfUjAK14fxe6YPkmScE41phC5CAHqWi6E2Xt6lD7zsrxOfTiumPhVvSgN35BS0AOGVM0Tx7tmnV9J0/s200/charriedesign3.png" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5433650786312032546" /><img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 200px; height: 162px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgzA8NaQ32D4qtxdo6Aa7s7Ov8wTNZSy_-dEFnuRPiRM93VyVzW4mdUsIxV5D1GOcvwoRGXcfkA2oIx8jsqcI7GJDaJB_cUyzzJWt-T9PldxLYr0uqrLH6JHaNQ9-2-e8JmlRHNApUUsVM/s200/charriedesign2.png" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5433650778906281986" />

it is important that I keep his design simple because this time I want to add shading to his animation, something I didn't have time for last time.
I think I am going to go with the design of the first picture, because it reflects the outfits of Gene Kelly and Donald O'Connor, and because it just looks better :P

My next step is to work out the storyboard completely and to start drawing the key poses, I want to get into this as soon as I can.

I have also finished working out the storyboard. I will post the results up here if possible...

So, after showing my storyboard to a few of my friends I think I am going to pursue my 'Singing in the Rain' idea. I was confused how to go about this though, since we won't be covering it in class, and so I emailed one of our heads of the course; Mike Smith! Below is the correspondence;

Hi Mike!

For my second industrial exercise project I want to animate on top of my
chosen film with a 2D character, and since you have experience of doing
this in the past, I was wondering the best way to go about it.

Can I animate my 2d character on toon boom/flash then import it on after
effects or do i need to animate the entire thing on after effects?

-Michelle

His reply;

Hi Michelle,

You can do one of the following production processes.

Traditionally draw your character animation on paper, clean it up then
scan to and if you require a specific look, import it into Illustrator
(or Photoshop) to tidy the line and colour. Import the coloured artwork
into After Effects, convert to 3D-2D and place accordingly into your
3D-2D BG - environment.

Using a wacom tablet complete your rough and some or all of your clean
up animation in either Toon Boom Studio, Toon Boom Animate or Flash.
Colour your character artwork in these software packages then import the
artwork to After effects.

Complete both of the above processes then separate out the artwork
(upper arm, lower arm, hand, fingers etc) and either complete pivoting
or hinging process either in the above softwares or in After Effects.
I'm pretty sure you can export to After Effects after you have completed
hinging but check the help files.

It really depends on what software you feel most comfortable completing
animating and what overall look or style your going for.

I hope that helps!

Regards,

Mike.

So my next step is to perhaps draw a more detailed storyboard, and generally just get animating!! I have already started my project however, and hope that this coming Wednesday I will be able to present it to my tutor, get feedback and then develop it as best I can!

So the brief...

"you must choose a short clip from a film and
composite in your own animated character, props or buildings. Perhaps you
feel that Four Weddings and A Funeral would have been better if there had
been more gorillas in it. Or that Titanic would have been better with
giant sea monsters. This is your chance to put things right. The clip you
use must, when composited, show at least 30 seconds of your own work. Do
not choose any animated films as you will have to match or better the
existing characters in the film. I can guarantee that the animators
working on that film would have had a lot more time than you have for this
project. So keep your choice to a live action film."

Our tutor, Stephen Crocker, has also stated that we can use either 2D or 3D.. and seeing as how I will be doing a lot of 3D work in my 'Digital Environments' project (see my other blog for info on that) I want to use 2D for this! (plus I had a lot of fun with it last time... might try and use Toonboom rather than Flash this time so I get a feel for different software).

I've watched a few films and television programmes over the past couple weeks in preparation;
One Flew Over The Cuckoos Nest
Harry Potter 4
It Could Happen To You
Forest Gump
28 Days Later
Singing In The Rain

I picked these because I enjoy them and because they are all from different genres.
By process of elimination I want to either choose 'Singing In The Rain' or 'One Flew Over The Cuckoos Nest'. These two don't have many special effects in them because they were made quite a few years ago and so animation might look better in comparison to films like Harry Potter which are full of special effects or Forest Gump where no good 'animation' moments jumped out at me.

My ideas so far...

This is the extract from 'Singing In The Rain';

I want to animated an eldery painter in the background getting bothered by their dancing and/or joining in!

And here's the extract from 'One Flew Over The Cuckoos Nest' (couldn't find a youtube version without commentary so feel free to mute);

Since most of the characters in this film are 'crazy' I thought I could animate random animals or strange creatures that are part of their imagination.

I'm going to make a couple of brief storyboards for each idea and then pick which one.
For the moment, my main animation idea is to have it in the style of 'Who Framed Roger Rabbit' so I will watch that film again as well for reference...

Hope to post up some of my storyboards soon, so until then!Michelle Vinallhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04475683890194875319noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1955629010162142273.post-78076319750644652522009-12-15T08:23:00.001-08:002009-12-15T08:36:47.436-08:00Christmas Project Take 2I'm a complete sucker for music and good music videos so when I saw Shynola on Jared's email list I clicked and was pleasantly surprised. For starters, Shynola isn't one person, it is a group of four visual artists from London who collaborate on music videos and other such projects. They also don't just stick to one medium and specialise in both 2D and 3D. The first video by them I found was 2D and created in flash (unless I'm mistaken.. if not flash then a similar program).

Strange, for sure, but since I want to become better at using flash I can learn a lot from the techniques they used.

Next I followed an adjoining link to another music video he directed by U.N.K.L.E. called 'An Eye for An Eye' which was weird to say the least..

but the use of camera moves and the 3D animation was awesome. Especially how everything tied in to the music and the designs of the creatures.

Finally, as I was researching Shynola using search engines I discovered they had completed a music video for one of my favourite bands - Coldplay. I had little trouble finding the animation on youtube.

I can only place the trailer for the video here as embedding was forbidden on the actual video, but here's a link to it; http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BYtk1Z0UUu
Anyway, it showed that they were also adapt in stop-motion animation, and combined it efficiently with 2D and in some places 3D... animation and coldplay, what a great combo :D

Looking at their work, it really makes me want to create music videos of my own, and perhaps I will over the next few weeks that I have off and beyond. There is little I can find that I dislike about Shynola, except maybe some of the concepts in their work to do with more carnal pleasures.. (I guess I'm still a bit of a child at heart, but I really don't like sex scenes and the like. It's not just Shynola but I'm using their video as an example here).

Anyway, mostly great stuff.Michelle Vinallhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04475683890194875319noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1955629010162142273.post-57532316545605890342009-12-15T07:50:00.000-08:002009-12-15T08:11:52.691-08:00Christmas ProjectI've always felt that backgrounds where a weakness of mine when it came to drawing, and especially with regards to perspective, which is why for Jared's project I've started by researching Piranesi, an Italian etcher, archaeologist and architect (4 October 1720 – 9 November 1778).

There is so much detail in his sketches that you really get a feel for the place he is drawing, the atmosphere. It's also interesting to me because most of his work is set around the 1740s and so is quite different from the environments we are used to seeing today. This led to a lot of problems especially with the 'actionscript' trying to create water effects, using the 'tween' tool and just getting to grips with all the functions.

I feel like I do know the program a lot better now; whenever I was stuck I either asked for advice from a fellow classmate (notably Dean Pankhurst and Steven Pender who have both previously used the program before this course) or I sought online help and tutorials from professionals like Maxwell Langdon.

The style of the idents was also a problem as first I wanted to create it similar to the ending animation of Bolt (see the first blog entry to view it), but animating without lines was a little tricky so I soon sought other inspiration and found it at the HAFF animation festival and through youtube videos. I think the style and vibrant colours I chose will attract the target audience to my animations.

I paced myself well with the project and have finished a week ahead of schedule so that I can get feedback and improve it if need be. I can't imagine how I could have completed this project with more success, I've tried my best with all aspects of it.

The one area I feel I am weakest in is the initial designing stage. Often I rush my ideas so that I can get started as soon as possible since I panic at the thought of deadlines! Going back it might be worthwhile re-thinking a few of the ideas and seeing if I can get them any more original or interesting.

Finally, comparing this work to the industry-standard out there I feel as though I still have a long way to go in terms of drawing skill and using flash to its fullest potential. There were no very interesting camera angles in my work and some of the animation was a little robotic because I didn't have time to dynamically animate everything. I would also be part of a team in the industry and wouldn't have to go through the process by myself so that could be solved later on. I feel the time frame I had was adequate and working a few hours a day really paid off instead of intensely working on it during one short period of time.

I really enjoyed working on this project and want to continue using flash in the future, it is a really inventive program and I feel I have not yet lived up to my animation potential using it, but this is as good a start as any.Michelle Vinallhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04475683890194875319noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1955629010162142273.post-3370490583529345722009-11-20T11:30:00.000-08:002009-11-20T13:31:18.396-08:00researchI realise this post is a little belated but I don't want to fail to mention some of my research so here it is.

After the formative I pushed myself into further research, and the BBC drama 'Merlin' was a useful start. It's set during the middle ages, aroundabout the same time Warwick Castle would have been an active castle.

The joust scenes in particular were very useful and while I may not have the time to go into as much detail as they did with the fighting, it was still useful and enjoyable viewing.

As well as this, from the 4th to the 7th of November, I went on a trip with Ravensbourne to the Holland Animation Film Festival (HAFF) in Utrecht. I saw 9 different films overall;
Competition shorts 1
Cartoon d'Or 2009
Gurren Lagann the Movie:Childhood's End
9
Piano Forest: The Perfect World of Kai
Coraline
Ponyo on the Cliff by the Sea
Competition Students 3
Competition Shorts 4

(http://haff.awn.com/)

The competition ones were especially inspiring as many were done by students my age or by professionals in the industry I'm aiming for. I looked on youtube for some of the ones that inspired me most;

Although the style is years ahead of what I can do, I loved the atmosphere this video created.

The mix of 2d and 3d animation is what really opened my eyes to this video.

I just really liked the simplicity of this one and the storytelling. You will need to watch it a few times to really understand it =)

Unfortunately most of them were not on youtube but for reference, 'Clichés de Soirée by Merwan Chabane and 'I am so proud of you' by Don Hertzfeldt' were also a great inspiration to me and helped me decide on the final style of my idents (which has changed somewhat since my first post...)

I got a lot out of the trip and I definately wouldn't have seen these animations otherwise so for that I am thankful.

I was also hugely inspired by a lot of videos people had made for fun on youtube using flash. I found a useful website called 'pixelhivedesign' and a flash tutorial for water.

http://www.pixelhivedesign.com/tutorials/Realistic+Flash+Water+Effect/

Unfortunately when i tried to apply it to my animation, there was a severe delay in the playback, so I emailed him with the query and here is a copy of our correspondence;

16 November 2009 at 12:04
Dear Maxwell,

I recently used your 'realistic flash water' tutorial, and while the example worked fine, when I tried to apply it to my own animation the playback speed was very slow. I was also trying to find away to make the 'bottom logo' and 'dragon' layers have the water effect on them, is that possible?

Anyway, thank you again!
-Michelle

16 November 2009 at 16:25:34
Hi Michelle,

I did two things. The main thing was you had the effect applied to an area of 720x800. I changed the 800 to 388, the size of the reflection:
myBitmap = new BitmapData(720,388,false,0);

The second thing I did was add a few lines of code to allow the effect to be paused. I pause the effect during the scroll up animation since you don't really notice the effect anyway during the scroll and it is also hard on the cpu to scroll and animate the effect. I unpause it when it's done scrolling. You can see how I pause it on the "water" layer on the main timeline. Look at the actionscript on the frame when you begin and end the scroll animation.

Animation looks good on my computer now.

Maxwell Langdon

---

I have since been able to complete that ident bringing my total of completed idents up to 4. So far I am on schedule but I'll need to finish the other two by friday and then worry about properly updating this blog. I took these photos plus a few videos of the events for animation reference.

Art-wise... I have started developing the jesters first, since I feel they are ideal mascots for the castle.

I also completed a digital picture of them for personal reference (although the style is a little too complex for animation) but I will simplify it down significantly to look more like the pictures above.

Also, when it comes to animating these guys, I plan to use the character 'Harley Quinn' from Batman as a good reference for how jesters hats should move!;

Thank you for looking!Michelle Vinallhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04475683890194875319noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1955629010162142273.post-89497252150181930872009-10-16T04:01:00.001-07:002009-11-27T00:29:21.903-08:00Industry Exercises projectWelcome to my Ravensbourne blog for the Industry Exercise project (unit 205)!

My brief will follow that of Brief B (produce a series of 5 second idents for the National Gallery) except I am choosing to focus on Warwick Castle instead as I visited it over the summer and was deeply inspired by the sights;

Brief B: Animation
http://www.warwick-castle.co.uk/

“We need some idents done to attract tourists, particularly children, to Warwick Castle during the summer, maybe your students could come up with some ideas for us? We need a range of five second clips that we can play before during and after television shows aimed at them, and to put on our website to reinforce the castle’s identity. They can use the logo, they can use images from the website, they can use current or future exhibitions as a theme; it would be really nice if they could reflect some of the colours that are commonly used; sky blue and yellow.

It would be great if they came up with a range of ideas… I would like to see six ideas from each of them. A storyboard for each as well as some explanation of why they have taken that approach would be excellent support for their actual animations. I suppose they’re going to have to do a little bit of research into the gallery and what we’re about to really come up with something useful…”

• Do some research into Warwick Castle
• Storyboard, explain, and produce six five second segments of animation to reinforce the identity of the Warwick Castle.

I want my idents to be aimed at the children that visit the castle (up to age 12 or so) and I plan to produce them all in flash, one for each attraction of their summer programme - jousting, the jester show, princess tower, fire-breathing, falconry and either the Trebuchet or castle dungeon.

http://www.warwick-castle.co.uk/

During the past week of research (which i will scan in over the next couple of days) I watched the animated Disney/Pixar movie 'Bolt' and want to produce my idents in the style of the end credits;

I have also made a playlist on my youtube account of all the different idents that I could find;
http://www.youtube.com/user/Pluschan#grid/user/28902601F0B9B497

but my favourite examples are the wallace & gromit ones as they are short and to the point. very effective! I want my idents to be similar to this;

I will continue to update this blog through the coming weeks with my progress. Stay tuned!Michelle Vinallhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04475683890194875319noreply@blogger.com0
